Workshops

NEW! Online workshop via Zoom.

Sunday, July 19, 2026. 3:30-5:00 pm ET. $29

Here's something I've heard a few times: "I'm interested in improvising, but I don't want to commit to a whole course about it."

Fair enough! My goal is to offer classes that respond to students' needs. So I've developed a 90-minute workshop using material taken from my eight-week course "Improvising in Irish Tunes."

I'll cover a number of basic techniques--things you can do to a melody to alter it enough to give it a personal twist, but not so much that you obliterate the original tune!

All levels and all melodic instruments are welcome. Even if you're not yet advanced enough to use these techniques, you'll have some options to keep in mind as you progress. You can always refer back to the class materials later.

This workshop will be recorded and remain available to registered students (for viewing or downloading) for three weeks.

This is a new workshop based on materials from Anne's 8-week "Improvising in Irish Tunes" course

Anne's next Tune Supply Workshop:

Anne is delighted to continue her association with Tune Supply, run by the amazing Caitlin Warbelow, which offers dozens (hundreds??) of online Irish music workshops every year. All Tune Supply workshops are "pay-what-you-can." But please remember that they are not free to produce, and the program will disappear if you just offer $1 for a workshop!

Workshop meets online via Zoom on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026 at 7:30 pm ET. It will be recorded for those who can't be there "live."

BATTLE OF THE MODES: MINOR VS. DORIAN

You’ve probably noticed that Dorian and minor keys are very similar. Indeed, these two types of scales are closely intertwined in Irish music. Once we’ve defined how to tell them apart, we’ll compare tunes and songs in either minor or Dorian and consider how the mode affects melody and harmony. We’ll also hear examples of some “indecisive” tunes that can’t seem to commit to Dorian or minor, but use elements of both.
